Norristhorpe Junior & Infant School

At Norristhorpe, we use the scheme ‘Complete PE’ which supports us in delivering a highly structured and sequenced curriculum. Our curriculum is designed to flow in a logical sequence of progression, enabling the learning to be developed within a unit of work.

The national curriculum organises physical education under four different areas.

Pupils:

• Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
• Are physically active for sustained periods of time
• Engage in competitive sports and activities
• Lead healthy, active lives

In order to meet the national curriculum aims and to enable our children to develop a wide range of skills, our Norristhorpe curriculum is split into units:
Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One

• Swimming

Our curriculum overview demonstrates how the requirements of the national curriculum are met at Norristhorpe School.

Progress is attained by developing skills, as children move through school. Our Norristhorpe P.E curriculum revisits key areas of learning allowing pupils to revisit and build on previous learning.

Lessons are carefully designed to include a range of teaching strategies which include, independent activities, collaborative and group learning. Lessons are designed to encourage children to move for sustained periods of time. 

At Norristhorpe, children receive two hours of P.E teaching a week in addition to other opportunities in the wider curriculum. Key Stage Two children receive specialist P.E teaching once a week.

Our Year Four children receive swimming teaching from our local provider, enabling them to be competent in skills such as:

• swimming over a distance of at least 25 metres
• using a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
• performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

These children represent their class for P.E.

Their role includes:

• Helping to promote physical activity throughout the school.
• Attend meetings with Miss Hodgson to discuss what we can do better in our school with P.E.
• Have a key role in sports assemblies, this might be distributing certificates, announcing winners for certain games etc.
• Monitor sports equipment.

These are the statistics for our pupils for: Year 6

Norristhorpe J & I School have been successful in achieving the Sainsbury's School Games Gold Mark 

"The School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community".

In October, our year 6 mixed team played their first match as a part of a 7 a side league with local schools. We played Roberttown, and after a tough match it resulted in a loss for us. Despite this, the team represented the school brilliantly, showing great sportsmanship and playing really well as a team for the first time! Also, a special mention to ‘player of the match’ Oliver who was absolutely sensational in goal, even the Roberttown referee came over to tell us how amazed he was with Oliver! We are looking forward to our next match!
